| [GLUG-chat] Re: OpenSource -- Accounting Software |
I just have to jump in here. We had a broken system here 2 years ago and refused to go M$ so I started investigating, in the end I had a choice between acc pack, SAP business one and Cubit. They are the only accounting software packages that are properly standards compliant and are known to work properly in ZA. I then found that alltough SAP advertises business one to run on Linux it didn't @ that stage and was being developed in China. Haven't checked on them lately so dunno what the status is there. Further the installation costs, cripeling per seat licensing and an abab programmer @ R200 to R600 per hour to get it customized worked out to *about* R160 000. I went white and never phoned the consultant back again. So this was out. Acc pack is a wonderfull system, runs well on Linux and is internationally acclaimed as one of the best. I seriously considered it, but then again my installation, consulting and customising worked out cheaper than SAP but still over R100 000. A bit harsh. Having known Andre for a number of years he started pestering me to use his system and how good it is. I was sceptical and asked him to show me. The accounts auntie and me went for a visit. I was impressed and she looked rather less cynical than usual. Short and long of it is, I looked for the best system around within reasonable price limits that would run on Linux and chose Cubit because it was the best, not because it was the cheapest. I didn't give up certain features to save money at all. We installed, trained and got the accounts department running for under R15 000 in total. We still need to do a spot of customisation and was quoted about R20 000 (capped project) for it, all the other quotes were open ended consulting. With the new API Cubit has we could even do it ourselves, but it is not my core focus so it is easier to let Andre handle it for me. If in doubt contact me and I will be a reference and give more particulars any time you want.
