[GLUG-chat] Re: Learning PHP

Good stuff!

If your used to severe OOP (C#), you'll eventually grow to hate PHP...

I highly recommend spending your energies on Ruby or Python, both
great languages that are very versatile and easy to pickup. Both use
packages/modules (namespaces) that PHP doesn't. Everything is an
object in both, whereas in PHP it is whatever PHP thinks it is. Python
is dynamically typed, but strict typed (IIRC Ruby is the same, but I'm
a few days into the manuals...).

I used .NET as a playground for OOP, and since then I've really got
more and more annoyed with PHP as every day goes by... I'm now moving
over all my projects to Python (and django) or Ruby (...on Rails),
depending on the challenge and how each framework will respond to
such a challenge.

But, if you want to learn PHP after all this rambling, get your hands
on this book http://www.sitepoint.com/books/phpmysql1/. I started PHP
when that book was still a 4 part tutorial on sitepoint and it did
help me a s***load. The author is brilliant, examples are clear and
concise.

Just my 2c,
