| [GLUG-chat] Re: OpenSource -- Accounting Software |
You Know... someone really wanted to know of a good open source, Linux based accounting application, and is probably really looking for a good answer so he/she can make a decision - is that not what this forum is REALLY about. Now, if you don't know anything about accounting software, or don't care for any, why don't you rather keep your nose out of this - that is why so few people stick to open source... because their questions don't get answered properly - this has turned into a stupid argument between Linux and Microsoft. Please forgive my point of view if it is screwed, but if you want to have "arb" Friday afternoon chats, keep that in a different forum, and try keep this one for real answers - if I have missed the plot, perhaps I should rather look somewhere else to get answers of my own, instead of reading through hundreds of lines of stupid replies and crappy answers. Here it is, to whoever really wanted to know. I am the owner of a SME IT company, I needed an accounting program: 1. I was not prepared to be ripped off by the price of Pastel 2. I wanted something that we could mould into the rest of our requirements 3. We do specialise in Linux - so going Linux was the most suitable option. I found Cubit (I can't even remember how), tried it, and it works brilliantly, in my mind even better that Pastel. I have tried to use Pastel, and it confused the hell out of me (I did not go to uni so I was not taught how to use it). Cubit looks good, works well, and can be moulded to how you want it - you have the source code. Further, don't give a damn if my accountant uses Pastel - that is HIS choice - I give him my statements and whatever else he needs, as printed by Cubit, or in an exported format we have agreed on, and he shoves it into Pastel, and does his job - that is essentially what he gets paid for, and not to determine what invoicing system I use. If you do know ANYTHING about accounting software, all you need to know is that it is GAAP compliant, if it is, you are sorted - Cubit is - so who cares about anything else. Now, if you don't like it, there is not much else you have on your options list - and if you want to slate it, go use Pastel. Someone else also mentioned payroll - Cubit has a brilliant payroll system already included.
