[GLUG-chat] Re: OT mp3 players for the car *flame*

Why are you flaming when stressed out? Haven't you learned yet that
that usually bites you in the ass?

Hmmm, so now we are at the level of personal insults. See below for
why that was not a good idea

If I remove the unwarranted sarcasm from this post I see you have
asked a very normal question. Continue to the bottom to find out why
you had me jumping through hoops to figure out what you were trying
to say

> Please feel free to email me for further explanation if you feel

No, I'm not overwhelmed and don't need anything explained. However,
perhaps you do. From your mail's headers:

X-mailer: Foxmail 5.0 [en]

Your mail shows up in my inbox as an isolated mail, not part of any
thread. So, I can't read the thread because I can't find it. I get
300+ mails a day from many lists, I cannot be expected to keep track
of all of them in my head with their subject lines. That's what
message threading is for, it was specifically designed to handle this
exact problem. But your mailer doesn't do it, there is no In-Reply-To
header in your mails. So how can I be expected to read the thread if
your mailer has broken the only mechanism I have to follow the
thread?

Then you top-post. Now listen to me young man, and learn something.
The reason why we are supposed to bottom-post is not so that old
farts like me can be pedantic. It's because it works, it avoids
flames like these and because it makes it possible for me to actually
figure out what you are trying to communicate. The smartest technical
brains on the internet figured this out 30 years ago. Trust me on
this, you do NOT know better.

I need the bottom post convention because when I read your post I need
the context refreshed. I need to do that because I have read 56 other
mails between the last one on the thread and yours and the cache in
my head has been flushed many times since. Top post in personal mails
to your mates all you want, but this is a *public* mailing list and
it (should be) archived so google can find it in the future. If you
want to communicate something to me and the rest of the GLUG
population, it is your responsibility to make sure you do it such
that your communication is well-received on the other end. It's not
my job to figure out what you are trying to say and the context in
which you are saying it, it's your job to make yourself fully
understandable.

You don't have a choice between top and bottom posting on a public
Linux-related mailing list, just like you don't have a choice between
driving on the left or right side of the road on the M1 through
Joburg.

And please, for the love of god, use a *standards*compliant* mailer.
