There is a boot option that disables the frame buffer. Something like "novga"?
The 1024x768 SVGA console running on a framebuffer is vga=719 ( i think)

AFAIR this is documented on the install disks (when you boot from the CD and press F1).

The first section explains the frame buffer options.
