You don't need PXE cards, just cards with EEPROMs, there are people who will 
burn you some EEPROMs quite cheap. You could also use etherboot images off of 
bootable floppy disks, if your cards don't have ROM sockets. I find that LTSP 
clients are more reliable than old machines with old HDDs. HDDs are one of 
the first things to go. I run 18 LTSP workstations at MIP and they are 
extremely stable. I did however use brand new celeron based machines, but 
they only cost R1800 each with monitor etc. P1s also work very well, if not 
identically to the celerons in most situations.
