| Re: GLUG: Mail Archive |
Hi Oskar Firstly apologies about any misunderstandings on my/our side, this followed from Morne trying to get the glug-experts@xxxxxxxxxxxx mailing list up, I'm not sure if he spoke to you but he forwarded me a mail from Tony Wade stating the facts about Qmail and that the linux/unix servers were changing, be it the servers themselves or the software they were running I can't say for certain. > That's just plain wrong. Sure, they are planning to move away from > sendmail to Qmail, but I think Bernstein (if I remember correctly) > will be a bit unhappy with you saying his program is MS solution > stuff, mainly because of the implications that Qmail isn't secure. Ok sorry if I was misguided, see above. > IS have been running Microsoft stuff on the internal network for > years now; nothing new there. That much I know, when I left there mid-1997 they were already starting the migration, but I was under the impression that it had practically all gone the Microsoft way now. > I don't see any one of Microsoft's current products supporting what > they do with Sendmail. Agreed, for one thing just not having the "sendmail" command for dynamic website generation programs and other such things will pose a huge problem, let alone the internal functionality. > If it looks like Qmail isn't going to work out for running the > list, there's almost certainly always going to be a sendmail / > majordomo box somewhere on the network; failing that, I'll organise > something else; perhaps a box on the network which they don't even > have to look at. Mike Smith has just mailed me saying if this does happen he can also probably find a machine running sendmail/majordomo to do this on. I'm just not sure why we didn't get this response when I asked Morne to look into it a couple of months ago. > The Glug side of the IS mail is maintained _only by me_. Thanks Oskar, there's another misunderstanding on my/our (probably just my) side, I didn't know that you still maintain the GLUG side of IS, I thought since you weren't physically at IS any more that we had no contact to the server there. > > so it's in a bit of a mess at the moment.
