gzipping logs

Hi all...

Apache (and other things) output to a log file... Near as I know, this is
just a pipe. Is there any way to automagically gzip this as it happens?
Ie, write data to gzip which writes data to end of log file?

Our apache logs are over the top in size and we want to try and zip them
as they log.
