linux dont do "winmodems" (yet......coming in the new kernel series) so if
it says HSP or such the like, it is EVIL. stay away as these things use
your CPU cycles at an alarming rate.

also, as i learnt at my expense the other day, if you want mgetty and
sendfax to work it must be a class 2 fax modem.

use YAST to set it up. dont have much SUSE experience, but it might be as
simple as:

ln -s /dev/ttyS0 /dev/modem

where ttyS0 is com1 under DOS.
com 2 is ttyS1
com 3 is ttyS2
etc, etc



best success with USR products. Duxbury are very happy on Linux as are
Microcom. External is good.

As far as Windows programs go, so far your best bet is that excellent piece
of software: VMWare. its commercial tho, so be prepared to shell out some
currency.
