Does 'dmesg' print out anything? I had a problem a while ago where
a funny kernel would start throwing away packets.

Other option is the network card - you resend rate on ethernet
is nice and fast, so if it throws away 1 packet in 10 it's still useable,
but on a serial line it's yucky... what packet loss do you get when
you ping continuously across the local lan?
