I would back up certainly, and swop in a new hard drive as soon as you can. Probably the best way to do it is to put in a new HDD, partition eg. first partition / of 500Mb for root fs, rest in /u for (/home, /opt, /usr/local). Backup your data into /u, and install a new system on the / partition of the new drive.
