1. Make sure that the following is installed as network
components on the Windows machine: 

TCPIP
Client for Microsoft Networks

2. Are you using an smbpasswd password file in the SAMBA
server? If so, then you can use Windows as is (i.e. with
encrypted passwords). If you're authenticating using, 
PAM, unix / shadow password file etc, you need to configure
Windows not to use encypted password -- install the 
registry patch which you should find in your SAMBA
documentation directory.
