are you sure the extension is .tar? Quite often when you download files from
the net, it doesn't add the .gz to it, and you have to rename it to
file.tar.gz

get:

tar: This does not look like a tar archive
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: 230 garbage bytes ignored at end of archive
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
