If ping is not disabled, then ...

1. on the 'router' ip forwarding must be enabled
2. clients on A and B must use A and B's ip address as their gateway to
   the other side.

Read the Firewall-HOWTO (just for fun).

It sounds as if it is perpendicular to the plane of what you want to
do.  That's normal.
