Hi Darren,
Compile PHP4 by using the --with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs directive.
Alternatively recompile APACHE with apxs support and then PHP4, this is
the option I prefer, as I then know exactly what my apache does
support/not support. Same goes for the PHP4 part.
On another note, get yourself the Zend Optimizer for PHP4 from
http://www.zend.com
