| RE: GLUG: Can it be faked? |
Mike,
Thanks for the ideas. I had though about an ethernet solution by having the
HP box write directly to the COM2 device file in /dev on my linux box. I
haven't yet decided exactly how I'll do this or even if it'll work.
Have you got any ideas on how to capture everything being written to the com
port?
Rgds,
Kevin

err
Theoretical solutioni A :)
Assumption: UPS sends power fail signal via serial cable
Assumption: Both machines are closish together
Wire up a serial cable between the linux box and the HP box
Check what exactly is sent to the HP from the UPs, and then write
a program to use the HP's seconds com port , and send that signal down
the com port to the linux box. Then just have a script that runs, and
sends that signal to the linux box when the HP receives it.
Possible solution to distance problem, with the assumption of a functional
ethernet during power failures
Wire up a com cable to plug from com port 1 on linux box to com port 2
Write a program on the hp that would login to the linux box and run a
command that would send the appropraite ups signals down com1 on the linux
box to be received by com2 on the linux box (com2 is being monitored by
the ups software) in the event of a power failure
All purely theory of course, but it might give you some ideas
Mike
