Hi there,
AFAIK SuSE uses different runlevels than RH.
XDM uses runlevel 3 in SuSE! You may run into trouble if you set it to 5.

I had difficulty configuring the screen resolution on the laptop but that's all fine now, but how do I get SuSe to start up directly into the X server?
<SNIP>
Open /etc/inittab and find the line:
id:3:initdefault:
Change the 3 to a 5 like so
id:5:initdefault:
Reboot to see it take effect. This works for a RH installation, I imagine Suse uses the same runlevels.
