you've forgot SMTP = Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, which is the
protocol used by The InterNet to transfer email, but POP3, IMAP, 
NFS, /var/spool/mail and M$Exchange RPC is
used by the Email readers (ie. User Agents) to retrieve the email from
the server.
