windows acting like Linux

Noticed the same thing here with ls -al.... This only worked when I was
logged onto the local network (server runs off Linux). When the machine
is on a stand-alone setup it doesn't work. Could it be that when the
network connection is present, we have access to the Linux commands?
(not very well put, I know....)
