I have installed X4 on a Mandrake system without much problems. I used the
RPM's for them

I might be mistaken .. but the dependancy warning you are getting is pretty
comon in installing new RPM's, though I don't think it will acually break
any applications unless there are MAJOR differances between the two ( GNU is
pretty good about compatibility )

Upgade the RPM using rpm -U appname.rpm --force to force the upgrade and try
the applications to see if they still work ... if it does you can always go
back to the older version using --force once again
