Hi there Hans.

there can be several reasons this happens.
once that I have found to be the most comon is this.

if you loged in as a normal user and then used "su" to change to root and
then run X .,. the applications cannot connect the the Xserver for reasons I
have not tried to discover.

if you run "startx &> Xerror.log" it will output all the application
messages to the file and you can have a look at possible errors.

if it says something along the lines of error connecting to xlib or xserver
on host ... this is the problem.
