GLUG: RH6.2 slow to su (fwd)

I think su does some kind of name lookup -- but I only notice
this when I configured diald at home, and notice that when
I su the modem dials out.

BTW -- a generally irritating thing about Linux for the
home user will prove to be things like this.  Trying to
use it on a dialup connection with demand dialling
brings up lots of funnies like this...start Netscape,
the phone dials.  Block the connection, Netscape takes
several minutes to start.  Why?
