[Linux dev] Ideas for a program?

I want to start playing with C programming under Linux but would like to 
actually code something that is constructive and has a use.

Does anyone have any ideas?
Some little app that does something that someone needs or would like.

The only thing I can think of so far is writing an app that monitors the 
growth of files or directories on a system so that an admin can see what is 
growing too fast or where all the disk space is dissapearing.
Not sure if it would be that useful though.
